I waited in line to see Santa yesterday for two whole hours… for a picture that took one whole minute. Oiy! It’s crazy the things us parents will do.

But in that two hours, I heard one of the most interesting and hilarious conversations I have yet to hear about Christmas gifts. It was between a wife and her husband standing in line in front of me, and it went a little something like this…

“Seriously honey, I have no idea what to get your dad. What do you suggest?”
“My dad likes bacon.”
“You’re suggesting we buy him bacon?”
“Sure, why not?”
“And for your brother?”
“He likes Star Wars. And bacon.”
“He’s 38.”
“So?”
“What about Granddad?”
“He likes bacon.”
-pause-
“Dare I ask what you want?”

I burst out laughing and then had to apologize for eavesdropping. The girl just smiled at me and said, “Men, right?” (eye roll), and her husband said, “Do you think there’s anything wrong with giving bacon as a gift?”

I just laughed and said, “Thank you, you guys made my whole day!” Their bacon conversation had turned a tedious lineup into something light and fun. And because of that, it made the misbehaviour of my impatient children a lot more tolerable.

But I was also curious about bacon gifts, so I Googled it when I got home.

I now share with you the top 15 bacon gifts you could give men for Christmas – complete with bacon wrapping paper n’ all. Why? Because something happened to that lineup of parents when we all started talking about bacon. This otherwise disengaged, exhausted and grumpy group of parents, immediately turned into a light-hearted conversing bunch of people. It was amazing to me. It was as if our children went from knocking over store displays and running into shoppers to sitting perfectly by our feet all because we didn’t care. We were too busy laughing and chatting and discussing the unnecessary stress of Christmas gifts to be bothered by how slow the line was moving. And we were all admitting that, yes, if we perhaps gave more gifts like bacon, there just might be a little more joyous humour to our Christmases.

So I leave you with this list in hopes that, A. it will make you smile… because isn’t that what Christmas is all about? And, B. I hope you conclude, “What will they think of next?”… because think about it, do we really need more stuff this christmas?
