Real Love

Today is Remembrance Day in Canada – a day we honor those who served our country and who sacrificed their lives so that we might live in freedom.

Today I will talk to my boys about what it means to go to war and what it means to live in freedom because of someone else’s willingness to serve.

Today we as a family will links arms with our community and attend ceremonies that allow us to pay our respects.

As a mom, this day breaks my heart. To think of all those moms who sent their boys off to war is hard for my heart to grasp.

As a Canadian citizen, this day challenges my heart. To think of what it means to serve my country and my countrymen in the most ultimate of ways grips me to my very core.

But as a Christian, this day humbles my heart. To think of the cross and how Christ so selflessly died for my sins so that I may live in eternal freedom compels me to my knees. There are no words for my depth of gratitude.

1 John 3:16 takes on a whole new meaning when read on a day like Remembrance Day:

“We know what real love is because Jesus gave up his life for us. So we also ought to give up our lives for our brothers and sisters.”

This is real love.
And this is definitely something worth paying respects to.
